Quick check-ins

Now and then, a small card asks whether you finished a book and how it was. It goes by your own pace, and it’s easy to quiet.

1 min4 steps
  1. Answer in a tap

When a book you’re listening to or reading is well past when you’d usually finish it, a Quick check-in shows at the top of your shelves. Tap Finished it, Still listening (or Still reading), Set it aside to move it back to Up next with your place saved, or Didn’t grab me to let it go.

  2. Rate it right there

Finished it turns into stars in place, then room for an optional thought (Save or Skip). A recently finished book you haven’t rated gets the same quick ask, with Ask me later if now isn’t the time.

  3. Your picks update

Each answer goes straight into your picks: books you loved bring more like them, and low stars steer your picks away.

  4. Which would you rather have more of?

Now and then the card shows two books you’ve finished, usually ones you rated the same. Tap the one you’d rather have more of, About the same, or Skip. If you enjoy these, they come more often (and Another appears); skip a few and they come rarely, then stop.

Good to know

How does it know when to ask?
From your own pace: how long your past books took you, in minutes a day, for listening and reading separately. It waits for a margin past your usual finish, and longer when it knows less about you. At 97% or more on your last progress update, it asks a day later.
Will it nag me?
No. Two at a time at most, three answers a day at most, and at most twice per book. Not now quiets it for 2 days, then 7, then 21; the message that follows has Turn off if you’d rather not see them at all. If you leave it on three different days, it quiets itself for a week. Skip three ratings in a row and it stops asking for ratings for six weeks. Never by email or notification.
What does “Didn’t grab me” do?
It takes the book out of In progress, keeps it in your library marked Didn’t finish, and steers your picks gently away from books like it. You’ll find it on the check-in card and on any in-progress book’s page. Set it aside is different: it just moves the book back to Up next for later.
Can I stop one book, or all of them?
Tap ✕ on a book and you won’t be asked about it again. To turn check-ins off, open Alert settings and, under Check-ins, untick Now and then, ask me to mark books finished and rate them, based on my pace. To stop just the which-would-you-rather questions, untick Sometimes ask which of two books I’d rather have more of.
